4-H PARTICIPATION AT CHAMPLAIN VALLEY FAIR
4-Hers, with instruction and guidance from volunteer leaders, plan and create exhibits that represent the past year’s learning. The Champlain Valley Fair, presented by Progressive, is the state’s largest fair and has a long record of active support for 4-H. Youth from Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Lamoille counties are welcome to exhibit. 4-H dairy members from any club in Vermont may enter the 4-H Dairy Show but must register with the enclosed form. Champlain Valley Fair provides 4-H with facilities, admission and premiums. The 2007 Champlain Valley Fair is an opportunity to create exhibits that will Educate the public Sell an idea or show how to do something Tell people about our program Sell 4-H to the general public Show the wide range of opportunities available through 4-H Allow you to take part in a large regional exposition 4-H is the off-campus youth educational arm of the University of Vermont and the United States Department of Agriculture. 4-H is charged with creating and supporting youth related projects through 4-H clubs. 4-Hers may also exhibit in the following open departments (according to each department’s rules and guidelines as listed in the Champlain Valley Fair’s Exhibitor Handbook): Art, Culinary, Fruits/Flowers/Vegetables, Home Crafts, Maple, Bees and Honey, Poultry, Sheep, Draft Horse and Cattle. For registration information for these departments call 878-5545 and request a Champlain Valley Fair Exhibitor Handbook and return appropriate forms to each department by the due date listed for each department. GENERAL 4-H RULES 1. Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Lamoille County 4-H members are eligible for participation. Ribbons and premiums will be awarded on the Danish system to all participants (Blue – Excellent, Red – Very Good, White – Good) 2. Cloverbud members (those 5 to 7 years old by Jan. 1, 2007) may only register and participate in Section IV posters, but will not be evaluated or receive premiums. They will be given special participation ribbons. 3. Exhibitors who remove exhibits before 7 p.m. or after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, will forfeit their premiums. 4. All hall exhibits must be removed on Monday, September 3 between 7 and 8 p.m. At 8 p.m., remaining exhibits will be left unattended. If you know you will be unable to remove your exhibit, please make arrangements to have it picked up for you. Vouchers for premiums will be available from 7 to 8 p.m. only. 4-Hers participating in the 4-H livestock shows who also have exhibits in the Exhibit Hall will have their show premiums and their exhibit premiums on one voucher, available on Sept. 3 between 7 and 8 p.m. 5. We will have personnel supervising the 4-H exhibits whenever possible, but all exhibits are brought to the Champlain Valley Fair at the member’s or club’s own risk. Do what you can to “steal proof” your exhibit. Do not exhibit small articles of considerable value. Move more valuable pieces to the rear of the exhibit and wire, tape or staple loose parts of the exhibit to a board. Securely attach posters. Before you leave, give your exhibit a safety check. 6. All exhibits shall have been produced, made or cared for by exhibitors within the past year. 7. Foods, vegetables and flowers used in an exhibit should be replaced when they become unattractive; if not, they will be removed. 8. Live animals are not to be part of any tabletop exhibit. 9. No more than five outstanding exhibits will be awarded a “Best of Show” ribbon and a $10 premium. A special team will review all exhibits and present this award to the exhibits they feel are the most worthy. 10. Each member may bring a maximum of 5 individually prepared 4-H Hall Exhibits, but are limited to a maximum of two posters, one photo, and/or two tabletops. Members may also participate in a club exhibit, stage presentation or action exhibit. 11. The title of each exhibit/poster MUST be on the registration form. 12. Entry forms are due Aug. 3, 2007. 13. Registered exhibits for the 4-H Exhibit Hall must be set up between 4 and 7:30 p.m, Aug. 22, 2007. | 4-H THEME PROMOTION “What is 4-H?” The theme for 2007 will be “What is 4-H?” You may incorporate this theme in any or all exhibits you bring to the exhibit hall. An added premium will be offered for the top three winners in the amount of $15 for first place, $10 for second place, and $5 for third place. Exhibits/posters which clearly display the theme will be evaluated and awarded by evaluators.
SECTION I – CLUB EXHIBITS These exhibits will represent the efforts and achievements of the entire 4-H club for the year. The exhibit may consist of tabletop examples with explanatory posters of the group’s projects and/or programs. These exhibits will show the many program opportunities available through 4-H. Exhibits will be set up with the youth involved. Please be sure your title sign includes your club name. Exhibits with a one topic focus will be evaluated as tabletops. Anticipated premiums: Blue - $30; Red - $20, White - $10
SECTION II – TABLE TOP EXHIBITS Educational tabletop exhibits will present sound information to the public about an idea or project learned through club or project group activities. The exhibits may be presented by the group or by an individual. A combination of words, pictures and objects are used to convey information and teach the viewer about a subject. Both a background display and 3-D articles displayed on the table must be used. Please be sure that your exhibit has a title sign. Make your exhibit appear unique and handmade if using computer-generated materials. Your exhibit should measure no longer than 40” wide. A sign for your exhibit indicating club and town should be incorporated into your exhibit. Anticipated premiums: Blue - $15, Red - $10, White - $5
SECTION III – ACTION EXHIBITS The action exhibit will consist of the demonstration of an idea or project learned through club or project activities. Action exhibits will draw the public to watch their presentation of information by showing their skills in progress and answering questions about their activity. Presentation should last 1 hour if up to 3 participants and 1 ½ hours if 4 or more participants are involved. The action exhibit should be set up and operated by members involved. Anticipated premium: up to 3 participants - $10; 4 or more - $20
SECTION IV – POSTERS Posters can be educational or can promote 4-H in a positive way. Their size should be either 14” by 22” or 28” by 22” and must be able to be hung securely on the wall. They may be horizontal or vertical and may be produced in any medium: watercolor, ink, crayon, charcoal, oils, collage or 3-dimensional. The 4-H theme may be incorporated into your poster. A sign for your poster indicating club and town will be made using the information on your registration form. 4-Hers may enter up to two posters. Anticipated premiums: Educational Poster Blue - $8; Red - $6; White - $4 Promotional Poster Blue - $6; Red - $4; White -$2
SECTION V – PHOTOGRAPHY 4-Hers may enter one photo that they have taken this 4-H year. Photo should be matted or mounted but not framed or covered by glass. Photo may be traditional, digital, digitally enhanced, or fine art. Photos must be 5” x 7” or 8” x 10” Anticipated premiums: Blue - $6; Red - $4; White - $2
SECTION VI – CLUB BANNERS OR FLAGS Clubs with pre-registered banners will receive $5 per banner. The banners must be of permanent cloth construction. The banners MUST be at the South Burlington Extension office on Spear Street by Monday, Aug. 20. Any banners not picked up at the 4-H Exhibit Hall on Monday, Sept. 3 by 8 p.m. will forfeit their premium.
SECTION VII – CLUB SCRAPBOOK 4-H clubs may enter a club scrapbook which reflects activities from the current 4-H year which should include photos, captions, news articles, etc. Anticipated premium: $15 per club.
SECTION VIII – STAGE PRESENTATIONS 4-H groups are encouraged to present a wide variety of entertainment for the stage on the mall. These acts should catch and hold everyone’s attention and can be dancing, singing, skits, physical fitness or any other suitable entertainment.
A brief introduction of your group’s presentation MUST be submitted with your registration.
All stage presentations will be during the day on Sunday, Aug. 26, and we will notify you of your performance times. Your group must report to the 4-H Hall at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. We expect you to take part in the parade at 5 p.m. You will perform at least twice on the stage during the day, mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Vouchers for stage presentations will be given after the parade for groups without additional exhibits. Anticipated premiums: Group - (4 or more) $30, Up to 3 individuals - $15
SECTION IX JUDGING JAMBOREE 4-H members will learn about judging various types of livestock/agricultural products and then actually judge some classes. This is open to any 4-H member who pre-registers. This will take place in the cattle show tent on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. High scorer will win an additional $10 premium. Ties for high score will be broken by the highest score in the class with the lowest cuts. Anticipated premiums: Blue - $8; Red - $6; White - $4
SECTION X – 4-H HORSE SHOW This event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1, with a barn meeting for all exhibitors at 8:15 a.m. All exhibitors must be ready to show their horses at 8:45 a.m. in the Horse Show Ring.
1. All horses shown must have been the member’s project since April 1, 2007 and have a current 4-H Equine Identification/Approval Form. The form must be properly filled out and must have a picture of horse and member securely attached. All horses must have a current rabies certificate (see entry form), as well as a 2007 negative Coggins Test. Remember, your 4-H member card allows you admittance to the fair. 2. Each member with a horse must pay an entry fee of $20, payable to “CVE,” which must accompany your registration form. Your $20 check (no cash, please) will be returned to you at the conclusion of the show. In the event of a lame or sick horse or a member unable to participate due to illness, injury or circumstances beyond their control (i.e. death in the family), you may get your money back by bringing a veterinarian’s statement for your animal or a written note from doctor or family for the 4-H member. These notes must be presented before 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3 to the 4-H office in the 4-H Exhibit Hall as the exhibits are released. Failure to do so will result in your check being deposited. 3. 4-H PROJECT CLASS, JUDGING, FITTING AND SHOWMANSHIP AND EQUITATION must be entered to receive any premium. You are automatically entered in these classes. Classes 16-20 are optional. If you do not have a horse which can be entered into the show, you may enter General Knowledge and Judging and receive premiums for them if you also enter an exhibit in the 4-H Hall. Be sure to mark your entry form. 4. Classes may be combined or divided depending on the number of entries. 5. It will be the responsibility of the exhibitors to report for classes on time. 6. Exhibitors must be neatly and correctly dressed while showing. 7. Danish ribbons will be awarded for all premium classes and rosettes for all other classes. 8. All rules not covered here will be covered by the “New England 4-H Rulebook 2007 Edition,” available on the 4-H website. 9. Ages: Beginner – 18 years and under; Advanced Beginner – 18 years and under; Junior – 13 years and under; Senior – 14 through 18 years. All ages are as of Jan. 1, 2007. 10. Beginners and Advanced Beginners may not enter Road Hack. 11. Each member may bring only one horse. Stalls are available and must be used. All stalls must be thoroughly cleaned before vouchers are issued. 12. Exhibitors may only show one seat. 13. Each horse is to be prepared and exhibited by the 4-H member. Vouchers will be given at the conclusion of the show for those attending only the horse show. If you have something entered in the hall, your horse show premium will be added to that voucher which may be picked up on Monday, Sept. 3 between 7 and 8 p.m.
SECTION XI – 4-H DAIRY EXHIBITS 1. The show is open to all Vermont 4-H members who meet VT 4-H Dairy project/show requirements. The animals they exhibit must have been cared for by them since May 1, 2007, be listed on a VT 2007 Dairy Approval Form, and have a scored record book on the animal. 4-Hers exhibiting in 2 yr. or older classes must present approval forms to prove their animal was their project animal prior to turning 2. 2. Ages: Junior – 8 through 13 years; Senior – 14 through 18 years. All ages are as of Jan. 1, 2007. 3. All animals in the 4-H show will be quartered in the 4-H barn and cattle barn. A substitution of ONE animal is permitted if a registered animal is sick or injured. 4. Each exhibitor must pay an entry fee of $10 per animal in the form of a check payable to “CVE,” which must accompany your entry form. Your check will be returned to you at the conclusion of the show. In the event of a sick animal, or the inability of the member to participate due to illness, injury or circumstances beyond their control (i.e. death in the family), you will get your money back , with a note. 5. All animals must arrive between 2 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007. Paperwork will be checked and animals will be checked by a vet before they are admitted. Animals should stay loaded until these checks are complete. 6. All members and leaders are expected to attend the dairy meetings at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 in the Show Tent and a closing meeting at 6 p.m. on Sunday. 7. Check out time is Sunday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. Members are encouraged to take part in the parade with their animal at 5 on that day. After 7 p.m., the animals may only stay on the grounds by becoming part of the Open Dairy Show (see Cattle Department in Exhibitor Handbook). 8. Members are expected to care for/watch the animals they are exhibiting between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. while the animals are on the fair grounds. If for periods of time the member cannot be on the grounds, it is the responsibility of the 4-H member to find a reliable person to care for/watch the animals from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. while the animals are on the fair grounds. 9. Closed toe footwear is required while working around the animals. 10. 4-H members will milk their own animals or have another responsible person assigned to do so. If you plan to milk in the parlor, please leave your name, address and Social Security number with the Milking Parlor Superintendent on Aug. 24. 11. Grain, hay and straw will be furnished by the Exposition. 12. Health regulations and vaccinations: 4-H animals must comply with requirements set for open animals and 4-H health requirements. Health papers will be checked, including rabies certificates. Cattle showing signs or indications of scabies, ringworm or other contagious disease will not be admitted. The 4-H and Fair officers have the right to remove or not admit any animal not meeting health requirements. Vet check is between 2 and 5 pm on Friday. Animals not checked and approved by the vet will not be admitted. 13. Safety regulations: No bulls may be exhibited. Animals with stubs longer than 2 inches may not be exhibited. 14. 4-H members may not sleep overnight in the barns. 15. 4-H exhibitors will maintain the 4-H dairy area keeping it neat and clean at all times. DAIRY CLUB EXHIBITS Club members who create an attractive club exhibit and maintain total charge and care of their animals from Friday to check out time on Sunday may receive a special premium of up to $15 for their club. The club exhibit will be evaluated throughout your stay based on the following: Decorations-Use of theme is encouraged Maintenance and care of animals and area Personal attitude of members and their representation of 4-H and its ideals DAIRY SHOW 1. The dairy project is a 4-H member activity. Parents, herdsmen and other adults are requested not to assist in the care or preparation of the animal in the dairy area or in the show ring. 2. You may enter up to three animals, with each being in a different class. You may also enter a Daughter/Dam class and Club class with these three animals. 3. All 4-H participants must enter the Fitting and Show Class, Dairy Judging and General Knowledge to receive any premiums. If you do not have an animal to show, you may enter Judging and General Knowledge and receive a premium if you also enter an exhibit in the 4-H Hall. 4. Exhibitors must be neatly dressed while showing. White clothing is desired. Sturdy footwear is required (no sneakers). Each exhibitor will be assigned a number, which will be worn during the show. 5. Every animal exhibited must be shown in a show halter. 6. Judging will begin Saturday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m., beginning with Senior Fitting and Showing and ending with the club herd class. The show continues on Sunday, Aug. 26 starting at 10 am with 4-H Dairy Judging. 7. A time will be discussed for show day milk down at the Friday barn meeting.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION |
| DONALD BIXBY 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS These scholarships are given in memory of Donald Bixby, a long-time director and enthusiastic benefactor of the Champlain Valley Fair, who was especially devoted to its young participants. The directors of the Champlain Valley Exposition will award four scholarships this year to outstanding 4-H members within the counties of Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Lamoille. Each scholarship will be awarded to a 4-H member only one time. Scholarships will be awarded as follows:
1. Three $300 scholarships awarded to 4-Hers accepted in any approved institution of higher learning.
2. One $100 scholarship awarded to a 4-Her in grades 9-12 and beyond to help them to further explore their career aspirations, by purchasing equipment (camera, sewing machine, etc.) or to attend training that could lead to a career.

| K. STEWART GIBSON AWARDS
“Stew” Gibson was a director of the Exposition for 25 years and is currently Director Emeritus. As University of Vermont Professor and Extension Dairyman as well as long time Superintendent of Cattle for the Exposition, Stew has been and continues to be a strong influence in teaching dairy cattle management and dairy cattle judging to Vermont and New England youth.
The eight awards of $150 each are presented to winners of the Vermont 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Dairy Judging competitions for the respective state teams that compete at regional and national meets. The awards are used to partially pay expenses at the National Dairy Quiz Bowl at Louisville, KY and the National Dairy Judging Competition at Madison, WI.
The 2007 Members of the Vermont 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team are: James Taft, Zach Barbeau, Jared Birch and Lewis Fox.
The 2007 Vermont 4-H Judging Team Members are: Ann Nora McGarry, Kyle Kayhart, Becca Sizen and Paige Sizen.
