Read and Win a Day at the Fair
The Champlain Valley Fair’s summer reading program begins in June. Young readers, from kindergarten age through grade 8, who read at least three books this summer can qualify for a free day at the Champlain Valley Fair on Monday, August 31. A noontime celebration for those who earned their Read and Win bookmark ribbons will be held in the Big Top Circus on the Reithoffer Midway. Attendees will receive a free ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar, a coupon for a free ride on the Reithoffer Shows midway, a special circus show, book giveaway and a chance to meet the Fair’s mascot Curly the Cow and Wolverine, star of the children's X-Men cartoons. Read and Win a Day at the Fair, sponsored by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) and Star 92.9, is part of the overall educational mission of the Exposition that includes support of 4-H activities and the School Field Trip Day on September 4, 2009. Last year, more than 3,000 students signed up at 44 city, town and village libraries in northern Vermont. Several hundred children attended the special recognition ceremony with their parents and friends. For more information about participating in Read and Win, contact your local children’s librarian.
School Field Trips to the Fair Friday, September 4, 2009 10 am to 2 pm Teachers / Educators: Are you looking for an exciting way to motivate students as they return to school after a long summer? Consider bringing them to the 2009 Champlain Valley Fair on Friday, September 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s an educational and fun way to motivate students, build teams and ease back into learning in the classroom. They’ll come away from their field trip buzzing with learning experiences you can then build on in science, history, nutrition and math throughout the year. And this year, we are again able to offer this program free of charge to school field trip participants. Learning about agriculture, careers in agriculture and Vermont’s heritage should be a key element in a youngster’s education and the Exposition has made it part of our non-profit organization’s overall year-round mission.
A field trip to the Fair is a great way to start the year and take advantage of a resource that isn’t available any other time of the year. Students will have the chance to…
• Find out what it feels like to milk a cow and learn about pasteurization. • See horses and oxen in action and talk about their role in Vermont farming. • Find out which came first - the chicken or the egg at Old MacDonald’s Farm. • Begin a discussion of genetics at the giant vegetables and flower displays. • Learn how their grandparents might have made rope or tools at Heritage Village. • Visit the Vt. Maple Producers Sugarhouse and get the “buzz” on beekeeping & sugaring • Discover how Vermont’s agricultural economy is adapting in the 21st century from the people who now raise emus, llamas, rabbits and sheep instead of dairy cows. Take time TODAY to make your 2009 back-to-school plans and reserve a field trip to the Fair on Friday, September 4 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
